Students will learn the basic ceramics techniques of pinch, coil and slab hand building techniques, as well as wheel throwing. Students will be working with various finishing and glazing techniques as well to create both functional and non-functional ceramics pieces.
Animals
This project may vary each year. In the past the theme has been under the sea, where students had to create a creature of their choosing that could be found under the sea, this could be anything from coral, fish, whales etc.
It's all about the food
Students need to create their own place setting to server and eat their favorite food. At the end of the project students will test the functionality of their dishes by having a food day, where they bring their favorite foods.
Tea for Two
For this project students need to work on their consistency in being able to make two tea cup sets that look as thought they came from the same set. The tea cups need to be functional and of an appropriate size. At the end of this project students will test their tea cups out during our tea party.
Slab Project
For this project students create their own work of art using the slab technique. Students need to incorporate patterns into this piece this can be done through voids, stamps, sgraffito, inlay, glaze transfer to name a few.
Wheel Throwing
Due to only having 1 wheel available for students use this is an optional project for students who finish early and would like to learn how to throw on the wheel.
Coil Pot
Students learn how to create and attach coils to build hight. For this project students need to use the coil method to create a work of art sculptural or functional that is a minimum of 8" tall after being fired.
Glaze Transfer tiles
Student learn the technique of how to create underglaze resisted by photocopying their personal drawings. They then learn how to transfer these designs onto wet clay.
Pinch Pot
For this project students are required to make a creating by combining a minimum of 3 pinch pots together. The piece can be functional or sculptural.
